The Shoes that were Danced to Pieces is the dance ensemble’s latest dance-drama—directed by Szilárd Gáspár-Barra—based on the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm and presented in a Renaissance style. The story is brought to life and made truly complete by the musicians of the Amaryllis Early Music Ensemble from Cluj-Napoca, featuring authentic 16th- and 17th-century Italian and English dance melodies and songs, unique period-accurate choreography, fabulous costumes, and magical set design.
In the tale, the old king locks his daughters’ room every night, yet by morning, the soles of their shoes are worn through—despite his constant efforts to provide them with new ones. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, he proclaims that he will give the hand of one of his daughters—along with his crown—to the man who can uncover the princesses’ secret. Many gallant suitors take up the challenge, but none succeed. Finally, a discharged soldier tries his luck; he heeds the advice of a mysterious old woman and ultimately wins a well-deserved reward.
The performance was presented in:
- July 12, 2026, Miercurea-Ciuc, within the Early Music Festival.
